You see it heading towards you with its aggressive black front grille, cambered set-up and tyres that protrude from the front arches further than you might expect.
Then you spot the black bonnet stripe, lowered stance and… BOOM you get a side view! It’s an ESTATE! All of a sudden it immediately thrusts it into a whole new level of cool.
Wait, what? Yep – a Stage 4 estate. Oh, and it’s manual too! Owner, Alex Kerr of AKS tuning is proud of this build, and rightly so! Could this be the ultimate sleeper for the practically-minded family-focused petrol head? This 2016 model started life as a pretty gutless (according to Alex the owner) 2.0L TSI turning out factory power – that’s 220bhp in real money.
“The car was inspired by the old-school BTCC 850 estates of 1994. Volvo made a bold statement with this car choosing a tourer producing 290bhp to compete against a grid of smaller vehicles, but just look at it – how cool!” Alex said.

Back to the VRS – a Revo IS38ETR turbo kit with a carbon intake and necessary supporting mods sees close to 500bhp. H&R lowering springs sorted the factory body roll and a set of big brakes made sure all the ingredients were there. Having just returned from a trip to Spa Francorchamps Alex is first to admit this car is built to be used… HARD!
“The power delivery is awesome – the car just keeps pulling and pulling,” says Alex. “It takes some beating on track and very few expect it to be as insanely fast as it is. Then you remember it’s just the ticket for a weekend tip run, fetching a new sink for the inlaws from the local DIY store and putting the dog in the back after he’s waded through the local park’s quagmire of a field,” he said.

Many people’s first reaction might be to say “why do this to an estate”. In actual fact, if you break it down, modding an estate might just make more sense than doing it to a traditional saloon or hatch! If you take into account the practicalities it affords you along with supercar-level power under your right boot.
